We are situated in the beautiful courtyard, together with the joining different structures. Actually we are in the center of the Antonia Fortress, in the Pretorium where the daily life of the fortress are carried out by the legionnaires. But up in the offices is situated the governor Pontius Pilatus, who just condemned the young man from the Galilee for a swift punishment. A rumor floats around that he has mentioned that he is king of the Jews. The doors will open; The young man will come out into the courtyard and the legionnaires will stop their daily activity. They will put the crown of thorns into his head. The crown will pierce his skin and blood will drop. The legionnaires will throw all their frustrations of their daily life upon him, as the whip will swish, and again, and again. Silence; the eyes are peeled. As the shackles will be free, and that young man, hurt, degraded, and punished will be taken back through those doors, back to Pontius Pilate’s offices. The first question everybody asks is, “Really it was here?” Really we don’t know exactly where the Pretorium was. There are different opinions among the scholars. Christian tradition maintains that this place was the Fortress Antonia. So the Fortress Antonia we know was in the northern side of the temple mount and it was exactly here where we are now. Also in other places we do not have other churches which maintains the same memories. So this is the only one. And this is very beloved by Christian pilgrims. Almost all of them come here before doing their Via Dolorosa. Here in this beautiful courtyard you can find two important sites. Behind me, the Church of Flagellation, built by Antonio Barluzzi. The unique interior marks the pain and suffering, images relating to the site, to the deed, to the pain. And to the right, the chapel of Condemnation. Station Number Two is situated within the compound of the monastery of the Flagellation controls by the Franciscan brothers in Jerusalem.

Way of the Cross - Station 2

Second station of the cross - Via Dolorosa – The Bearing of The CrossThe roman soldiers tortured Jesus, dressed him up and mocked him with a crown of thorns whichpierced his skin while calling him “King of the Jews” they then spat on him and bowed down before him (Mark 15, Matthew 27). Two churches have been built at these sites to commemorate those events- theChurch of the Flagellation and the Church of Condemnation and Imposition of the Cross. The Church of Flagellation is a reconstruction of an early shrine that was built in 1839. It was reconstructed during 1927-1929 and remained the church current structure until now. The architect of the church was Antonio Barluzzi. The church includes three stained glass notable windows. The first window illustrates Pontius Pilates washing his hands. The second presents the flagellation and the third depicts the victory of Barabbas. Located in the same Franciscan complex as the Church of Flagellation, the church of Condemnation marks the site where Jesus was given the Cross to bear through the city streets all the way up to Golgotha for crucifixion. It is part of the second station of the ‘Way of the Cross’. The church was originally built in the Byzantine period but was converted into a mosque. It was restored and renovated in 1904 and has remained an important Roman Catholic church ever since. The floor of the chapel is covered with Lithostrotos, street pavement stones that prevented people from slipping as they walked. Including an exclusive interview with Fr. Eugenio Alliata, professor of Christian Archaeology SBF Archaeological Museum Director
