Shops of the Cardo - The Cardo - Old City in Jerusalem, Jewish Quarter
The Cardo, Jerusalem, Israel. By the Ramban Synagogue is the open-air Cardo. The columns indicate that this was the main street during the Roman period when Jerusalem was named ‘Aelia Capitolina’ and it is why it is known as the ‘Cardo’ which is Latin for heart. Archeologists now believe that this section of the road was not built during Herodian times but 200 years later in the Byzantine period as a passage to the Nea Church. This road was used for commerce and was a main market place as can be seen by the store spaces on the sides of the road.
