Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives

Jerusalem with the dome of the Rock on Mount Moriah aka Haram al-Sharif aka the Temple Mount. In the background is the Mount of Olives which has been central in the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths.

Mt. Olives includes the Garden of Gethsemane - where it is believed Jesus was caught and arrested on the night after the Last Supper. Some ancient olive trees from the times of Jesus still adorn the mount.

The mount of Olives in Jerusalem is also a site of many biblical events from the times of David. Jews believe that from the Mount of Olives the Messiah will come heading towards Mount Moriah as it is written in the book of Zecharia 14:4:

"On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south"
