Holy Sepulchre Church in Jerusalem - the Stone of Anointing
Just inside the entrance of the Holy Sepulcher Church stands The Stone of Anointing, this is also called the Stone of Unction. According to tradition, this was the spot where Jesus' body was prepared for burial by Joseph of Arimathea.
The wall behind the stone of anointing sits on top of the graves of four 12th century kings. The lamps that hang over the stone were contributed by Armenians, Copts, Greeks and Latins.
According to some traditions, the stone of anointing is the 13th station of the Stations of the Cross.
“And in the meantime they carefully wrapped him, together with spices and myrrh, in a new linen cloth, that had never been used by anyone.” (Apocryphal Gospel of Gamiliel)
