The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, also known as the Church of the Anastasis, is considered to be the holiest church in the world - For this is the place where Jesus had died, and this is the place where he was buried. The church was constructed in 325 A.D. by Emperor Constantine. It was destroyed, rebuilt and altered many times over the course of history, but has been virtually unchanged since 1854. In the confines of the church are 5 of the 14 stations of the Via Dolorosa, also known as “the way of sorrows”.
This is the path Jesus walked from his condemnation by the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate, to the location of his crucifixion and burial. For Christians all over the world, visiting the Via Dolorosa and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is considered the high point of the pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
