At the lowest point of the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, 22 stairs from the chapel of Helena is the Chapel of the Finding of the Cross. The marks of the original use of the chapel as a quarry can be seen on some of the exposed rock on the roof and walls. According to tradition, it was here, in that chapel which used to be a cave, that Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine has found the fragments of the cross. You can see a bronze statue of Helena, holding the cross.
