Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem
The Dormition Abbey is located on Mt. Zion in Jerusalem, adjacent to the Old City walls and the Zion Gate. The Abbey of the Dormition was built on the remains of an ancient Byzantine church, Hagia Sion. A Benedictine community, the Mt. Zion building of the Dormition Abbey was built in 1900, and has also been known as the Hagia Maria Sion Abbey of the Virgin Mary. The Dormition Abbey is recognized by its circular shape and seven niched alters.
