The Cardo Maximus in Jerusalem
The Cardo was Jerusalem's main street during the Roman and Byzantine periods. The Cardo led from Zion Gate to Nablus Gate, and was lined with elaborate pillars in the Roman style. Currently, the Cardo is the main shopping street in Jerusalem's Old City, and runs through the Jewish Quarter and the Muslim Quarter. Many important archeological finds have been made along the Cardo and its network of alleyways.
